Salvation Army Assisting Residents Impacted by Severe Weather in Eastern PA & DE

Philadelphia, PA (April 16, 2019) – The Salvation Army of Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware has dispatched teams with its Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) to Sussex County, Delaware and Columbia and Sullivan Counties in Eastern Pennsylvania in response to severe storms on Monday.

 

The National Weather Service confirmed an EF-2 tornado touched down in the community of Laurel, Delaware on Monday. The Salvation Army dispatched a canteen (mobile feeding unit) to the hardest hit neighborhood, where 25 homes were damaged or destroyed.  The team provided meals to impacted residents in that neighborhood and at a Red Cross shelter nearby. The Salvation Army of Eastern Pennsylvania & Delaware’s Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) is preparing for deployment to Texas to aid in the disaster response and relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. With the widespread impact of the disaster already being felt and what could be an unprecedented relief effort, The Salvation Army’s Divisional EDS Department is readying a team of staff and volunteers to respond to Texas. EDS Supports City of Philadelphia During Winter Storm Stella

The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) is gearing up to support the City eds-smallof Philadelphia in response to the impending winter storm “Stella,” which is forecasted to hit Pennsylvania late Monday night, March 13, and into Tuesday, March 14.

EDS has been tapped by the city to distribute 150+ meals to staff at the city’s Emergency Operation Center starting Monday at 9 pm through Wednesday. EDS staff and volunteers are on stand-by with the city to assist with transporting homeless individuals to shelter, if needed. They may also be called upon by the city to distribute meals to homeless individuals sheltering in the subway stations in the Center City area.  In the meantime, EDS crews are finalizing preparations on their Salvation Army canteens and emergency response vehicles to ensure they will be able to maneuver the city streets in the snowy conditions.
