CHESTER, PA (May 7, 2019) – The Salvation Army of Chester announced today it is a recipient of a $15,000 grant from The Foundation of Delaware County, which will be used to make much-needed improvements to its kitchen facilities. The Salvation Army of Chester’s feeding programs provide more than 36,000 meals a year to underserved residents of Chester, specifically focusing on adolescents and older adults.
Each year, The Salvation Army of Chester supports thousands of local individuals and families in need through its feeding programs (food pantry, free breakfast and lunch for those in need), homeless shelter, life skills seminars, music instruction, after-school programming, sports fellowship (afternoon and evening youth basketball) and summer camp.
The city of Chester is one of the most deeply impoverished communities within Delaware County. According to the 2017 U.S. Census, Chester’s poverty rate was 35.9-percent, more than double that of Pennsylvania’s 12.5-percent. The Salvation Army of Chester seeks to alleviate the financial burden of food insecurity for community members, which will be made with greater ease after the renovations to the facility’s kitchen and more kitchen supplies.
A refrigerator, dishwasher and garbage disposal are just a few of the features that are to be replaced in the renovation. These accommodations to the kitchen are necessary because the kitchen is used not only for the cafeteria and food pantry programs, but for after-school, senior and permanent supportive housing programs as well.
Once the kitchen is fully refurbished, The Salvation Army anticipates serving our community members faster and more effectively, while also decreasing maintenance costs thanks to the brand-new equipment. These kitchen repairs could not be possible without The Foundation for Delaware County.
The Foundation for Delaware County focuses on building a healthy community and encouraging philanthropy in Delaware County. The organization offers programs and funding for men and women of all ages, including youth and seniors, who are facing some of poverty’s harshest effects.
