A Volunteer Prepares Soup for Displaced Residents & 1st Responders

The Salvation Army of Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware’s Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) has activated teams in Schuylkill County in response to significant flooding from summer storms in several local communities today.

Staff and volunteers based at The Salvation Army of Pottsville and The Salvation Army’s Service Extension Unit are supplying meals for first responders and displaced residents in Tremont and Donaldson. They are also providing coffee, water, and snacks to emergency responders at a command center established in Frackville. On Tuesday, EDS will be distributing clean-up kits to residents who are in need of cleaning their homes damaged by the floods.

EDS deployed staff and volunteers to numerous Schuylkill County communities less than three weeks ago when flash flooding devastated homes, businesses and roads. Teams provided food, water, comfort and care to displaced local families and first responders assisting with evacuations.   They also supplied clean-up kits to hundreds of residents.

The Salvation Army is working together with local and state officials to provide emergency disaster response and relief for as long as needed. EDS teams are on stand-by across Eastern and Central Pennsylvania, and may be deployed to additional impacted communities if the flooding situation worsens.

“The Salvation Army strives to bring hope and healing to people who find themselves in the midst of extremely difficult situations,” said Robert Myers, Director of Emergency Disaster Services at The Salvation Army of Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware Division.   “Our staff and volunteers are committed to supporting those impacted by the flooding for as long as is needed.”

The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) provides basic needs and services to victims of disaster, while also assisting first-responders. Serving one – two million Americans in dozens of response efforts nationwide, EDS is often one of the first on the scene to aid emergency response efforts by providing food, shelter, clothing and spiritual comfort.
